Christmas Trends of 2022

The year has flown by and with Christmas fast approaching, perhaps many of you are starting to think of how to decorate. And with the current economic climate, do you head into the loft and drag out the old tried and tested Christmas decorations, or is it time for you to change your decor this year?

We’ve looked at this year’s Christmas trends, using Google search data and TikTok, to reveal what is in for this upcoming festive season!

Christmas Gnome

Gnomes, as well as gonks which bear plenty of resemblance to gnomes, have been touted as big decoration trends for 2022. These adorable dolls and ornaments are often adorned in Christmas-like attire, they can be put on or around the Christmas tree or on top of the mantlepiece to add a bit of fun to your Christmas decorations.

DIY Christmas Ornaments

DIY and homemade in general seem to be huge trends this year. With the economic storm, many are facing, this cheaper alternative to decorate your home may be welcome this Christmas. This creative activity can be done with the whole family and lead to unique pieces that end up being passed down for generations, adding character to your Christmas decorations.

Christmas Lanterns

Christmas lanterns have been an up-and-coming decoration trend for 2022, garnering more than 400,000 hits across Google Search and TikTok combined. Lanterns are often seen in summer but can be a unique way to light up your Christmas, as opposed to the tried and true fairy lights.

Christmas Wreaths

A tried and tested Christmas classic, you can use wreaths for your interior design needs over the festive season or go with the old-fashioned door wreath. The green colours from the foliage and red berries are classic Christmas colour combinations. And there are additional things you can add including small jingle bells and pine cones, or you could even spray the wreath with artificial snow for that extra festive feel.

DIY Advent Calendar

Advent calendars are a wonderful aspect of Christmas, helping us count down the days to Christmas Day whilst giving us small gifts or chocolate. A new trend is creating your own DIY advent calendar. You can purchase pre-made advent calendars that you can fill with whatever you desire, which would make a great personalised gift for someone, or you can make it entirely from scratch for an even more personalised touch!

Flocked Christmas TreesThe dream of a white Christmas is on most people's minds during the festive season but sadly, it is not one that comes about for many. Flocked Christmas trees are a good solution to the lack of the white stuff! A white powdered mixture is applied to the branches of the tree, giving it a frosted and snowy look, and bringing the magic of a white Christmas into your home.

Grapevine Wreath

Grapevine wreaths are coming out as the biggest wreath trend of 2022, according to Google search data and TikTok views. You can easily buy this more natural wreath from a range of florists. However, if you’re feeling handy, you could make one yourself and add some personalised touches, such as red berries and pinecones.

Dried Flower Wreath

Another wreath with an aesthetic inspired by the natural world, this one utilises dried flowers. If you should make one yourself, you could supplement this look using winter flowers, pinecones and other bits of foliage from the season, as well as citrus fruits.

Eucalyptus Wreath

Eucalyptus wreaths are another trending take on the classic Christmas decoration, again also leaning into a more sustainable and natural take on Christmas decor. Using eucalyptus leaves as a base gives you plenty of versatility, during Christmas you can add red berries and miniature Christmas ornaments, or even some snow spray for that festive look, and then repurpose it for other seasons.

Pink Christmas Tree

Coming out as the most popular and trending Christmas tree colour of 2022, we have pink, with more than 17.5 million hits across Google search and TikTok. Whilst it’s not a particularly classic Christmas colour, especially where your tree is concerned, it can definitely be utilised for a candy-themed Christmas.

Red Christmas Tree

The second-most trending Christmas tree colour of 2022 is red, which brings things back to a more classic Christmas colour. This is a look that you could easily see styled with metallic-coloured Christmas ornaments, such as gold and silver baubles, which are two colours that are also seen to be trending this year.

White Christmas Tree

Most people dream of a white Christmas, but that’s not always a realistic wish, in comes a white Christmas tree. This can be used to imitate the effect of a snowy Christmas, which you can pair with warm-coloured ornaments, such as red and rose gold. However, if you want to lean into the snowy and winter theme, blues lights and ornaments are also an option.

Black Christmas

A bold and more modern take on a classic Christmas decor style and colour palette means incorporating black and dark browns. Alongside that, we also see the classic green and red, with white accents so often associated with the festive season.

Traditional Christmas

Traditional Christmas colours seem to never get old, making it a relatively safe call when decorating your home each Christmas. The traditional colours that surely leap into everyone's mind for Christmas are reds, greens and whites, even golds and browns are recurring in this theme, with each colour representing something different. And with this much flexibility, it can work in any home space.

Blue Christmas Tree

This decor style has been aptly dubbed as blue Christmas tree, utilising navy blue and other darker colours to mimic the chilly festive season. There are also golden, yellow and silver accents seen in this design palette, allowing the metallic shades to mimic the lights on a Christmas tree.

Heirloom Christmas Ornaments

It would seem that the Christmas theme that appears more likely to stick around for the long haul is heirloom ornaments. Depending on how old these are, they can appear quite vintage, which ranked in the top ten for our Christmas decoration trends. And, aside from the vintage aesthetic, being able to pass down sentimental items from generation to generation brings a unique touch of Christmas magic to the home.

Christmas Cottage Decor

With the surge of the cottagecore interior design trend, it makes sense that cosy cottage-style Christmas decor may well also become popular. With a full 86% search volume increase, this decor style, featuring cosy fireplaces and British cottage-inspired motifs, is the second most timeless Christmas trend for 2022.

Gingerbread Christmas

Gingerbread houses are a popular treat for the festive season, but what about a whole gingerbread-themed Christmas? This takes inspiration from gingerbread houses and such, with their green and red icing being prominent colours, even gingerbread ornaments are featured. This one is almost good enough to make your mouth water!

Methodology -

Using a variety of different sources, we built a list of various trends for the 2022 Christmas season. We split these trends into three categories; interior design, palettes, and decorations/ornaments.

From here, we searched for each of these terms using Google Keyword Planner and TikTok, to get a total number of searches for these terms. We then ranked each term in its specific category on that total number. The search data for these terms were taken from September 2021 to August 2022 for Google data. And then TikTok data was taken on 28/9/2022 and 17/10/2022, specifically for the colour tends, wreath trends and Christmas tree colour trends.

For the timeless trends, however, we used Google Keyword Planner again and got the year-on-year search volume change for each term. We took this data from September 2018 to August 2022.
