There’s something about a Christmas market that makes it worth braving even the chilliest December evening. Maybe it’s the twinkling lights, the wooden chalets, or clutching a steaming mug of hot chocolate while the cold nips at your nose. But you don’t mind because you’re with family, friends, your partner… or even just a plate of those mini Dutch pancakes.

For many of us, visiting a Christmas market is as much of a festive tradition as decorating our artificial trees or debating how early is too early to start playing Christmas music.

With famous festive markets stretching from Manchester to Manhattan, which are actually worth planning a trip around?

To find out, Christmas Tree World analysed some of the world’s best-known Christmas markets. We compared Google searches, Instagram posts, TikTok videos, December hotel prices, market history, entry fees, number of stalls and proximity to public transport to create an overall Christmas market score out of 10.

We also delved deeper into the data to uncover the markets that stand out for families, couples and budget-conscious travellers, as well as where to escape some of the biggest crowds and, arguably most importantly, where a mug of mulled wine will cost you the least.

Key findings

• Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt has been crowned the world’s best Christmas market for 2026, scoring 8.2/10 after almost four centuries of festive tradition.

Which are the best Christmas markets in the world?

From centuries-old German traditions to New York’s famous winter villages, the world’s best Christmas markets all offer their own take on festive magic.

Our index compared 28 markets across eight factors, rewarding destinations that combine popularity and tradition with practical considerations such as affordability, choice and accessibility.

1. Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is crowned the world’s best Christmas market for 2026

If there were ever a place that could make a convincing case for being Christmas market royalty, it would be Nuremberg.

Christkindlesmarkt takes first place in our study with a score of 8.20/10. The German market has been running for 398 years and still attracts huge interest today, receiving 818,200 Google searches over the 12-month period analysed.

Its popularity carries over onto social media, too, with 41,700 Instagram posts and 2,800 TikTok videos associated with the market.

Visitors have plenty to explore once they arrive. Christkindlesmarkt has approximately 180 stalls and is free to enter, while the closest public transport stop is a four-minute walk away.

And for anyone picturing a traditional German Christmas market, Nuremberg doesn't disappoint. Think wooden stalls, glühwein, bratwurst and the market's distinctive Zwetschgenmännle, little decorative figures traditionally made using dried prunes.

December hotel stays average £144 a night, making Nuremberg considerably more affordable than some of the other globally famous festive destinations in our top 10.

2. Manchester beats New York, Edinburgh, and Strasbourg to rank second in the world

You don't have to board a flight to Germany to visit one of the world's highest-rated Christmas markets.

Manchester Christmas Markets rank second globally with a score of 7.64/10, putting the city ahead of festive heavyweights including New York's Winter Village, Edinburgh Christmas Market and Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik.

Part of Manchester's appeal may be the sheer scale of the experience. Rather than being confined to one square, the markets have spread across multiple city-centre locations in recent years. In 2025, Manchester City Council reported 274 stalls across 10 locations, with everything from gift chalets and international food to an ice rink and a 50-metre Ferris wheel. The markets have also been running since 1998 and attract millions of visitors into the city each year.

That scale comes without the same accommodation premium as New York. In our study, an average December hotel night in Manchester costs £107, compared with £483 around Winter Village, helping explain why Manchester performs so strongly when popularity, choice and affordability are considered together.

3. Dresden’s 592-year-old Striezelmarkt completes the global top three

Long before Christmas markets became TikTok backdrops and weekend-break bucket-list additions, Dresden was already doing things very well.

The 592-year-old Striezelmarkt ranks third in the world with a score of 7.50/10. It has approximately 240 stalls, is free to enter and sits just a four-minute walk from the closest public transport stop.

Dresden's festive traditions are closely tied to Stollen, the city's famous fruit bread, while average December hotel stays come in at £123 per night.

The best Christmas markets in the UK for 2026

The UK has no shortage of places to grab a hot chocolate, browse a chalet full of decorations you definitely didn't plan to buy and wonder whether one more portion of festive food is a sensible idea.

But according to our data, some markets stand out above the rest.

1. Manchester is officially home to the UK’s best Christmas market for 2026

Manchester doesn’t just lead the UK ranking, it does so by a clear margin, scoring 7.64/10 ahead of Edinburgh at 6.95/10 and Birmingham at 6.71/10.

For anyone who wants a big festive city-break experience without heading overseas, Manchester offers plenty of choice. The markets spread across the city centre and bring together hundreds of stalls, food spots, bars and gift chalets, so there’s enough variety to easily make a full afternoon or evening of it.

It also performs strongly across the wider factors we analysed, from popularity and scale to affordability, which helps explain why it comes out ahead of every other UK market overall.

One area where Manchester is less competitive is proximity to public transport, with the closest stop in our dataset 11 minutes away. Even so, its overall score is enough to secure the UK top spot comfortably.

2. Edinburgh takes second place among the UK’s best Christmas markets

Edinburgh Christmas Market ranks second in the UK and joint fifth globally, with a score of 6.95/10.

If popularity alone decided the winner, Edinburgh would have a very strong case. The market received 920,700 Google searches, more than any other UK Christmas market except Hyde Park Winter Wonderland.

It also racks up 60,200 Instagram posts and 4,800 TikTok videos, making it one of the most socially visible markets in the entire study.

Hotels are pricier than in Manchester, averaging £189 a night in December, but entry to the market itself is free and the nearest public transport stop is just a five-minute walk away.

3. Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market completes the UK top three

Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market takes third place in the UK with a score of 6.71/10, making it one of the strongest options for anyone craving a traditional German Christmas market without leaving the country.

The market is modelled on Frankfurt’s festive tradition, with bratwurst, pretzels, glühwein, German beer, handcrafted decorations and live music all helping bring that atmosphere to the centre of Birmingham.

It also offers a relatively easy and affordable festive break. Entry is free, average December hotel stays cost £93, and Birmingham New Street is just a four-minute walk away.

The market has approximately 80 stalls and attracted 326,900 Google searches during the period analysed, alongside 23,300 Instagram posts and 1,800 TikTok videos.

Which Christmas market should you visit in 2026?

There isn't really one perfect Christmas market for everyone.

A family juggling hotel costs and little legs may have very different priorities from a couple planning a festive weekend away, while travellers trying to keep December spending under control might care much more about accommodation and entry prices.

So, alongside our main index, we used selected factors from the wider dataset to see which markets stand out for different types of festive trip.

Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is the best Christmas market for families

For the family ranking, we compared entry fees, average December hotel costs, number of stalls, and distance from the closest public transport stop.

Striezelmarkt comes out on top, giving families plenty to see without making it unnecessarily difficult to get there or through the gates.

Families don’t just need a Christmas market that looks the part. Easy transport, enough to keep everyone entertained and costs that don’t spiral can make a big difference when kids and Christmas budgets are involved.

Striezelmarkt ranks first for families, combining 240 stalls with free entry, average December hotel stays of £123 and a four-minute walk from the nearest public transport stop. That means plenty to explore without adding an entry fee or a long trek into the day.

Basel takes second place and is especially convenient for families travelling with younger children, sitting just one minute from public transport. Birmingham and Nuremberg share third, but for different reasons: Birmingham keeps accommodation costs lower at £93 per night, while Nuremberg offers more than twice as many stalls, with 180 compared with Birmingham’s 80.

Manchester is the best Christmas market for couples

For couples, we combined average December hotel prices and number of stalls with Instagram and TikTok popularity, helping identify markets that balance plenty to do with that all-important festive atmosphere.

Manchester takes first place, with 274 stalls providing plenty of excuse to make an afternoon or evening of it.

The markets have inspired 65,300 Instagram posts and 1,900 TikTok videos, while average December hotel stays cost £107.

For anyone whose idea of romance involves glühwein and gingerbread rather than candlelit fine dining, Nuremberg comes second, followed by Dresden in third.

New York's Winter Village may be one of the most social-media-famous choices, with 46,700 Instagram posts and 8,200 TikTok videos, but an average December hotel stay of £483 sees it share fourth place.

Nottingham Winter Wonderland is the best Christmas market for budget travellers

Christmas is expensive enough before adding a city break into the mix.

For our budget ranking, we focused on two of the costs travellers are likely to face before they've bought so much as a gingerbread biscuit: December hotel prices and market entry. A Christmas market getaway doesn’t have to mean expensive flights or eye-watering December hotel prices.

Nottingham Winter Wonderland takes the top spot, with free entry and average December hotel stays of just £81. As well as its traditional market stalls, visitors can make a proper festive day of it with seasonal food and drink, rides and attractions in the heart of the city.

Chester follows incredibly closely, with hotels averaging £82 a night, while Winchester comes in at £87, Leeds at £91 and Birmingham at £93. Better still, all five markets are free to enter, leaving a little more of the Christmas budget for presents, festive treats or another round of hot chocolate.

That isn’t the case everywhere. Some of the other markets in our study charge for entry, including Hyde Park Winter Wonderland at between £1 and £8.26, Vancouver Christmas Market at £3.70 to £11.65, and Tokyo Christmas Market at around £4.60 to £9.21. Shanghai German Christmas Market is one of the cheaper paid-entry options, with tickets costing around £3.27 to £4.36.

For anyone tempted by a Christmas market city break but put off by the cost, the results suggest some of the best-value options could be much closer to home.

Looking for a quieter Christmas market? These festive favourites draw smaller crowds

For some people, the buzz of a packed Christmas market is part of the fun. For others, fighting through a crowd while carrying a hot drink in one hand and three shopping bags in the other is rather less magical.

We looked at the latest publicly available visitor estimates for the markets where figures could be found to identify those reporting lower overall attendance.

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market has the lowest estimated visitor figure in the available data, at 120,000, making it a strong option for anyone who likes their Christmas markets a little less hectic.

Tallinn follows at 200,000 visitors, while Vancouver Christmas Market records 250,000. That’s a very different scale to some of the biggest names in the study, with Manchester Christmas Markets attracting an estimated 9,000,000 visitors and Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market with 5,000,000.

For travellers who want the atmosphere, food and festive browsing without quite so much jostling for space, Winchester, Tallinn and Vancouver stand out as appealing alternatives.

The Christmas markets flying under the radar in 2026

Some Christmas markets are so famous they barely need introducing. Others offer just as much festive charm without dominating everyone’s social feeds by November.

Shanghai German Christmas Market is the most under-the-radar destination in our study, recording just 18,730 Google searches, 100+ Instagram posts and 166 TikTok videos. For travellers who like the idea of discovering a festive market before it becomes the backdrop to everyone else’s Christmas content, that gives Shanghai a very different appeal to the likes of New York or Edinburgh.

Basel is perhaps the more surprising hidden gem. Despite having only 1,000+ Instagram posts and 168 TikTok videos in our dataset, the market attracts an estimated 900,000 visitors. With around 150 wooden chalets spread across Basel’s historic Old Town, traditional Swiss food and a market previously voted Best Christmas Market in Europe 2021, its popularity appears to be driven more by the experience itself than social-media hype.

Last but not least… Where can you find the cheapest mulled wine at a Christmas market?

Let's address one of the most important pieces of festive market research.

A warming cup of mulled wine can cost surprisingly different amounts depending on where you're spending Christmas, so we compared available prices across a selection of the markets in our study.

Winter Wonders in Brussels offers the cheapest mulled wine in our study, with prices starting at £2.14. Cologne Cathedral Christmas Markets and Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik also perform strongly for affordability, with prices starting from £2.56.

At the other end of the scale, a mulled wine at New York’s Winter Village costs around £11.74 – more than five times the starting price in Brussels. Chicago’s Christkindlmarket is another considerably pricier option at around £8.80, while prices in Tallinn can reach £7.70.

The difference shows how quickly the smaller costs of a Christmas market break can add up. A couple buying two rounds of mulled wine in New York could spend close to £47, compared with less than £9 if buying four drinks at Brussels’ lowest recorded price.

For travellers who consider a warming drink part of the essential Christmas market experience, destinations such as Brussels, Cologne and Strasbourg offer some of the best value in our study. Better still, all three combine relatively affordable mulled wine with the traditional lights, stalls and festive atmosphere people travel to Christmas markets for in the first place.

Four ways to get more from your Christmas market trip in 2026

“Christmas markets can look quite similar at first glance, but our research shows the experience can vary massively depending on where you go, who you’re travelling with and what you want from the trip.

1. Don’t assume the biggest name is the best fit
   Famous markets might get the most attention, but they’re not always the best choice for every traveller. If you prefer a slower pace, looking beyond the headline destinations can uncover markets with plenty of atmosphere but fewer crowds, while families may get more from somewhere with easy transport and lots to explore.
   
   

2. Look for the thing that makes each market different
   The best Christmas markets usually have something you can’t quite recreate anywhere else, whether that’s a local food, a centuries-old tradition or a decoration style that’s unique to the city. Instead of trying to tick off as many stalls as possible, find out what the market is known for and make that part of the visit.
   
   

3. See the same market in two different lights
   A market can feel completely different in the afternoon and after dark. Arriving before sunset gives you time to browse properly, while staying into the evening means you get the full effect of the stalls, decorations and warm Christmas lights once they start to glow.
   
   

4. Take note of the details you want to recreate at home
   Part of the fun of visiting different markets is seeing how each one creates its own version of Christmas. Whether it’s traditional colours, statement lighting, oversized baubles or a beautifully decorated tree, taking inspiration from the details you love can help you bring some of that atmosphere home with your own Christmas decorations.”

Methodology

Christmas Tree World is one of the UK’s leading online retailers of artificial Christmas trees, Christmas lights and Christmas decorations, helping families create magical festive displays that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Passionate about all things Christmas, we wanted to uncover which Christmas markets around the world are the must-visit destinations for 2026. We analysed 28 of the best-known festive markets to find out which offer the strongest combination of popularity, tradition, affordability, choice and accessibility, while also exploring the best options for families, couples and budget-conscious travellers.

We analysed some of the most famous Christmas markets from around the world, giving each a normalised score out of 10 based on the following factors:

• Google search volume data: sourced using Google Ads Keyword Planner based on global search data over the last 12 months, from August 2025 to July 2026.

• Instagram hashtags and TikTok mentions: approximate publicly displayed counts collected from Instagram and TikTok on 24 August 2026.

• Average nightly December hotel cost: sourced using KAYAK.

• Walking time to the closest public transport station or stop: measured in minutes using Google Maps.

• Years since the current market or event was first held.

• Entry fee, where applicable.

• Approximate number of stalls.

For the final three factors, a range of sources were used, including official Christmas market websites, local tourist boards and travel publications. Figures may vary for the 2026 season as individual markets confirm or update their plans.

Each factor was normalised into a score out of 10, with higher scores awarded for greater search and social media popularity, a longer-running market and a larger number of stalls. Lower hotel costs, entry fees and walking times received higher scores. Each factor was given equal weighting, with the eight normalised scores averaged to create the overall Christmas market score out of 10.

Alongside the overall ranking, selected factors from the dataset were used to reveal the best Christmas markets for different types of festive trip:

• Families: average December hotel cost, entry fee, approximate number of stalls and walking time to the nearest public transport stop.

• Couples: average December hotel cost, approximate number of stalls, Instagram posts and TikTok videos.

• Budget travellers: average December hotel cost and entry fee.

To identify Christmas markets with potentially smaller crowds, we also compared the latest publicly available visitor estimates for markets where attendance figures could be found. As visitor data is not reported consistently across every destination, only markets with publicly available figures were included.

For our mulled wine comparison, we used the latest publicly available prices we could find for selected markets, converting prices into GBP where required. Where prices were provided as a range, the midpoint was used for ranking purposes.
