What is a bauble wreath?

A bauble wreath is a festive, decorative wreath primarily made using…yep, you guessed it… Christmas baubles!

These glass or plastic balls come in various shapes, sizes and colours, so you can choose the designs or styles to suit your home’s Christmas decor theme.

Bauble wreaths look fabulous in your home, and creating your own can make a fantastic DIY for the whole family!  People often use their homemade bauble wreaths to adorn front doors or as centrepieces on the mantel for holiday gatherings. They also make a fun, thoughtful gift for a friend or neighbour!

The baubles can be arranged in various patterns or colours to suit different themes and personal preferences, making each wreath unique and charming. Whether you want to go whacky or classy, it's a great excuse to get the family together and see who can make the best decoration.

Tools and equipment list

Before you start building your perfect Christmas bauble wreath, you'll need to gather a few things together.

  1. Circular wreath frame: You can make these out of foam, craft wire, or even sturdy cardboard. You can also purchase frames from some online craft supply stores.
  2. Assorted baubles: The best bauble wreaths use a variety of shapes, sizes and colours, so don’t hold back! Choose an eclectic mix of baubles to create an eye-catching centrepiece.
  3. Glue: You’ll need a non-toxic adhesive to fix your baubles to your frame. Hot glue guns are ideal for this; you can buy them easily in hardware stores and online.
  4. Ribbon or string: This will help you hang the wreath in a location of your choosing - the mantlepiece, on a door, over the bannister…you name it!
  5. Optional decorations: Additional decorations like ribbons, greenery, or lights can help you add a personal touch to your decorations.

How to make your own Christmas bauble wreaths

1. Prepare your workspace

Much like Father Christmas himself, you need to make your list and check it twice before starting a craft project! Gather your materials and prepare your workspace to ensure you have everything to hand.

2. Choose a wreath frame

You can find circular wreath frames made of foam or wire at most craft stores. If you want to be thrifty, you can also reshape an old-school wire coat hanger! It's important to understand where you want to put your wreath before you assemble it, as the size of the frame will determine the overall size of your wreath.

3. Sort the baubles

Separate the baubles by colour and size, or maybe in general order of how you want them to sit together. This will make it easier to visualise the final result, creating a balanced and visually stunning festive wreath.

4. Create a pattern or random arrangement

This is where you can have a lot of fun and unleash your creative side!

You can create mesmerising wreaths by alternating colours or sizes of baubles in a pattern. If you want to get a little Christmas-crazy, you can arrange them randomly for a more playful look. Feel free to experiment with different arrangements until you are satisfied with the final look of your DIY bauble wreath.

5. Start glueing the baubles

If you have a hot glue gun, now is the time to heat it up. From here, begin attaching the baubles to the wreath frame, starting from the outer edge and working your way inward. Apply a small amount of glue to the top or side of the baubles, then press it firmly onto the frame.

Be careful not to burn yourself with the hot glue. If you are working with children, assign your little helper elves the task of picking out which bauble goes next instead of them helping out with the glueing.

6. Fill in the gaps

As you work your way inward, slight gaps between the baubles might make the wreath look a little hollow. Be sure to fill these gaps with smaller baubles. If you have any other faux greenery or decorative materials, now is a great time to throw them into the mix.

Top tip: don’t forget the glitter!

7. Quality check for balance

Just like in Santa’s workshop, quality control is a necessary step!

Be sure to take a step back occasionally to check if the colours and sizes are evenly distributed around the wreath. Visualise your wreath glimmering under the Christmas lights, with the family watching on in DIY-infused wonder. Make adjustments as needed to maintain a balanced, professional appearance.

If done right, your guests won't know the difference between your wreath and a store-bought!

8. Add optional features

If desired, add extra decorations like ribbons, bows, or some Christmas lights to give your wreath an extra festive touch. This is another good opportunity to get children involved as this is quite a simple task that makes a big difference to the final look.

9. Attach a hanging ribbon

Now, it's really coming together. Once you are happy with the arrangement, flip the wreath over and attach a loop of ribbon or string to the back of the wreath on the wiring. This will be used to hang the wreath on your door or wall, solidifying your statement of festivity.

10. Hang and enjoy

Your bauble wreath is now ready to be hung proudly in your home! From here, you can hang it on your front door, above the fireplace, or anywhere you want to add a classy touch of holiday cheer.
